The Story
In March 1964, Kitty Genovese was murdered outside her apartment building in Queens, New York. The New York Times reported that thirty-eight neighbours heard her cries and did nothing — a count later disputed by reporters and historians, but the case gave psychology a name it still uses today: the bystander effect.
Bibb Latané and John Darley tested the idea properly a few years later, staging emergencies in front of strangers under controlled conditions. The result held up again and again — the more people who witness someone in trouble, the less likely any single one of them is to step in. Everyone assumes somebody else already has.
Oscar drew the street the way it usually looks, not the way it should — a boy crouched over something small in the gutter, a mother scrolling past with a child on her hip, and right at the edge of the page, easy to miss, a pair of feet that haven’t moved in some time.
