The Story

This is the story of a boy from the coast,
An ordinary kid who was normal at most
This boy played cricket with a cheap little bat
Tennis shoes and a worn old hat

And his roar they say was less lion than sparrow
As he fled from the ball like a flaming arrow
Which explains his nickname, known as ‘blanket’
‘Cause much as he tried he could never quite spank it

So this boy became filled with quiet sadness
And with every passing game turned to madness
Until a peculiar thing one moonlit night
Befell as he slept, arose early and bright

Something had changed he couldn’t describe
A confident wisdom had been inscribed
He looked no taller but felt 8 foot
With energy bursting for a place to be put

They say that Phar Lap could outrun at will
That’s how he felt as he went for the kill
See, the ten year old kid who had been so plain
Was now his adult self, boyhood had been slain
In mind and strength and will and force
The boy strode to bat as a galloping horse

Now what unfurled is still hard to believe
As the bowlers were blasted without reprieve
And when he’d finished, the gathered crowd
Stood stunned by the brutal way he’d ploughed

Never before did a boy hit three hundred
That record score had never been plundered
Old Tommy said he’d never seen nothin’ like that
Nothin’ had been wielded like that bat
What happened that day was a mysterious event
No one could say what it really meant
The events that day caused a stir in the state
His fame had spread, newspapers lay in wait
But no matter where they looked in the nation
That boy had vanished from every location

He lives in the sticks some now claim
or he’s plundering bowlers under a different name
But I knew that boy and can tell you with a wink
The boy from that day is closer than you think
